Redsen

Tubers are round to oblong with thin, smooth bright red skin. It has shallow eyes with slightly curved eyebrows and white flesh. Medium to high yielding variety with very bright red tubers that hold their color in storage. Tubers are susceptible to bruising, therefore special care should be taken at harvest and handling into storage. Variety relatively free of hollow heart and other internal defects. High dry matter content. Suggested uses: baking. (1)

  • Origin & Breeding:bred by the North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station from the cross (ND8978-3R x ND9403-20R). Released in 1983.
  • Maturity:medium early

Agricultural

Medium to high yielding variety; very bright red tubers that hold their color in storage. High dry matter content. Short dormancy period.

  • Utilization:excellent for baking, good to fair chip color and quality, fair for boiling. May develop after-cooking blackening when boiled after prolonged storage.
  • Chief Market:fresh market.

Botanical

  • Plants:medium to large; semi-erect; waved double and pigmented wings; nodes and internodes pigmented.
  • Leaves:medium size, open; petioles slightly pigmented.
    Terminal leaflets: decurrent and slightly asymmetrical.
    Primary leaflets: generally three pairs; medium ovate.
    Secondary leaflets: several.
    Tertiary leaflets: few, between primary leaflets.
  • Flowers:medium to large lavender corolla; large orange yellow anthers; flower buds slightly pigmented.
  • Tubers:round to oblong; thin, smooth bright red skin; shallow eyes; slightly curved eyebrows; white flesh.
  • Sprouts:ovoid; red; base very pubescent, strongly pigmented; tip moderately pubescent, not pigmented, close habit.

Diseases

Highly resistant:race 0 of late blight.
Moderately resistant:common scab, silver scurf.
Susceptible:bruising, fusarium dry rot. (2)
